How do you activate the New iPhone 3G?

So im getting an iPhone 3G From the states on Friday, Ithasnt been activated and is still sealed and has the at&t sim in it. I heard that you can activate it through iTunes you need to just enter the IME Number and It activates it. Is this true. And if you cant are the any “Hacks” for this yet???
