what are consequences of hacking iphone 3G?

iphone 3G. I’m interested in jailbreaking my 3g, but have heard that with the first generation, AT&T bricked phones that were hacked. I want to stay on AT&T but want to be able to install non-AppStore apps. If I jailbreak the phone, what are the risks it gets bricked by AT&T/Apple?
