Is it possible to use a wireless ‘phone card’ on a found phone?

concerned_earthling asked:

I am a bum and looking for aluminum cans & plastic bottles to recycle I have come across several mobile phones.
Some of them expensive looking flip open phones
They must be cheap if they can be thrown away because the battery is dead or something.

Anyway I was thinking of trying to get a charger and extra batteries for one of these phones and then get a mobile phone card like those sold at 7/eleven.

Is this a valid idea or is there a flaw that I have not thought of?

If it is possible do I have to get a phone card that matches the phone?
For example I have two phones that look to be made by samsung one is a ‘mobile’ and one is ‘sprint’ could I use a 7/eleven card on either or would I need to use a mobile or sprint card respectively or is there another option?
