The Nokia N81 8GB is a stylish cell phone that includes camera, music, Personal Information Management, and map functions. The 4.94 ounce, 4.05 inch height by 1.97 inch width by 0.7 inch thickness, is a comfortable to hold package. Easy access to the input keys is achieved by sliding the phone open. Eight gigabytes of memory is standard.
The 2.4 inch diagonal, 320 by 240 active matrix QVGA screen displays quality images including up to 16.7 million colors.
The 2 mega pixel camera has 20x digital zoom and captures video pictures in MPEG-4 format at 15 frames per second. MPEG-4, H.264, H.263/36PP, and Real Video 8/9/10 video formats are supported. The Image Sequence mode automatically takes up to 6 pictures with one depression of the shutter so the best picture can be selected while editing. The integrated flash includes a red eye reduction feature.
Both a stereo digital music player and a stereo FM Visual Radio are standard. The music player supports MP3 (VBR), AAC, eAAC+, WMA/M4A and WAV formats. Playlists and music synchronization via PC are supported. Integrated stereo speakers and a 5 band equalizer are included.
Phone capabilities are extensive and include Speed Dial, Auto Redial, Contact List, Conference Calling, and Fixed Dial that allows calls to be placed to only predefined numbers. Voice Activation functions include speaker independent name dial, voice commands, and voice recording. A hands free integrated loud speaker is standard. VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) internet calling is also supported to reduce long distance phone charges.
Concatenated SMS (Shared Message Service) and MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) support text messaging and the T9 Predictive Text key method enables quick, accurate entry of text.
Personal Information Management functions include a Web Browser, Calendar, To-Do List, Measures and Currency Converter, Alarm Clock, Calculator, Notes, and PC Synchronization of Contacts and Calendar.
The Nokia Maps application is included and free worldwide maps can be downloaded. Active navigation is easily implemented with a separately purchased Nokia GPS wireless Bluetooth module.
Connectivity to other devices is possible through WLAN IEEE 802.11 b/g with UPnP (Universal Plug and Play), Bluetooth 2.0, and Micro USB 2.0 Full speed interfaces.
The battery can be expected to provide an average of 240 minutes of talk time on GSM networks, 180 minutes on WCDMA networks, and 17 days of standby depending on usage characteristics.
